C.H.A.S. App

(Comprehensive Health Assessment System)

Client: DMI

DMI (DNA Medicine Institute) is a Cambridge based research company dedicated to the innovation of medical technology.

C.H.A.S is an application for Windows mobile devices, designed to serve as user interface for the rHEALTH Tricorder technology, a self-diagnosing solution designed for the QUALCOMM TRICORDER XPRIZE competition.

The autonomous diagnosis solution entails the use of a breadth of tools and the performance of intricate procedural progressions. The design therefore appealed to iconography and sobriety to achieve clarity. The testing sessions proved the design to be self-explanatory and instructional.

The Challenge

  1. Continuous monitoring and realtime displaying of vital signs (5): blood pressure, body core temperature, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate.
  2. Allow people with no medical training to self-diagnose for a breath of conditions: COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Desease), anemia, diabetes, HEP A, HIV, shingles, stroke, UTI.
  3. Clarity and intuitiveness. The use of animation, illustration, and video, allowed for more comprehensible procedures and task required from the user.

The Design Process

The application was thought-out to make the continuous-vital-signs-live-data screen (Vital Signs Report) the home screen. From the Vital Signs Report screen, the user can access all features of the application. Many preliminary design phases were discarded to achieve a condensed and clear home screen that allows people of all walks of life to readily self-diagnose for a breath of conditions.

Conveying the idea - pre-UX prototyping tools era

Adobe Illustrator was the technical tool used to convey the app architecture to the creative and development teams.
